EU launches hydrogen supply and demand matching platform
The European Commission has launched its clean hydrogen supply and demand matching platform as it looks to ramp up offtake agreements.
The Hydrogen Mechanism from the European Hydrogen Bank is designed to improve market transparency, aggregate data, and connect producers, infrastructure players, and consumers.
It comes under the EU Energy and Raw Materials platform, which provides matching for raw materials, natural gas, and biomethane.
The first round of matching is planned for September this year.
Policymakers say the platform will provide demand signals that will support planning and investment decisions.
Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen said the measure would “empower” the European industry to “seize competitive opportunities.”Trade body Hydrogen Europe has welcomed the mechanism, but warned that it is just one “small part” of the market-building process.
“Its impact will remain limited without targeted support for offtake or a link to concrete funding instruments, especially for early movers,” it wrote on LinkedIn.
The group called for demand-side support through contracts for difference, public procurement mandates, and support for “lead markets” to unlock final investment decisions.
