The facility in North Gyeongsang uses power from an 8.3MW solar installation to produce up to 230 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, primarily for local hydrogen refuelling.

10MW of alkaline electrolysers from Norway’s Nel have been installed after the original equipment manufacturer won a €5m ($5.8m) contract in 2024.

Samsung C&T claims the project is South Korea’s “first” off-grid green hydrogen production site.

Having carried out the entire engineering, procurement, and construction process, the firm will also carry out future operation and maintenance services.

Jeong Gi-seok, Head of the New & Renewable Energy Research Institute at Samsung C&T, said that the project secures the technical basis for promoting large-scale green hydrogen projects domestically and abroad.

“We plan to continuously strengthen our competitiveness in the global green hydrogen market based on our eco-friendly energy technologies and business capabilities,” he added.

Earlier this month, Samsung C&T signed up to buy green ammonia from India’s Reliance Industries under a 15-year offtake agreement valued at $3bn.

South Korea has a relative frontrunner in hydrogen technologies, currently holding a large portion of the globe’s deployed fuel cell vehicles.

However, the country’s domestic clean hydrogen production remains limited. While new Samsung C&T plant is small in scale, it could unlock future developments in the market.
