Doosan Fuel Cell begins mass production of systems using Ceres solid oxide technology
Doosan Fuel Cell has commenced mass production of fuel cell stacks and power systems based on Ceres Power’s solid oxide technology. The systems are being manufactured at Doosan’s dedicated facility in Jeollabuk-do, South Korea, with an annual output of fuel cell systems capable of generating 50 MW of electricity.
This development marks a significant milestone for UK-based Ceres Power, as Doosan is the first of its strategic licensing partners to begin commercial-scale manufacturing of products based on its metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) design.
Initially targeting customers in South Korea, Doosan Fuel Cell will market the SOFC systems for stationary distributed power applications. These include data centres – where AI-related processing is driving increased electricity demand – as well as grid stabilisation for renewable energy, microgrids, building power systems, and auxiliary marine power.
Doosan’s facility, whose construction began in 2022, is the first in the world dedicated to manufacturing Ceres’ SOFC technology. The company expects to begin selling its solid oxide fuel cell products before the end of 2025.
“Doosan Fuel Cell’s commencement of mass manufacturing is a major step in bringing this technology to the world,” commented Phil Caldwell, Chief Executive Officer of Ceres. “Fuel cells have a major part to play in meeting the world’s rapidly-increasing power demands, developing energy resilience and ensuring decarbonisation.”
Doosoon Lee, CEO of Doosan Fuel Cell, added: “In South Korea, the world’s leading fuel cell market, we aim to lead the adoption of advanced SOFCs by leveraging our collaboration with Ceres. By commercialising these technologies and promoting their domestic production, we intend to spearhead the acceleration of the global transition to a decarbonised society through eco-friendly energy solutions in the commercial power market and maritime mobility.”
