Toyota Industries has developed an engine that uses ammonia as a single fuel

Aiming for installation in generators, collaboration with Denyo~

December 17, 2025 Press Release – Products & Technology

Toyota Industries Corporation (hereinafter, Toyota Industries) has developed an engine that uses ammonia as a single fuel, which emits no CO2 during combustion, instead of gasoline or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). Based on this achievement, Toyota Industries and Denyo Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, Denyo) have initiated joint development aimed at installing the engine in Denyo’s generators, targeting proof-of-concept trials to begin by the fiscal year 2027. Through the development of this engine, Toyota Industries aims to contribute to achieving the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Ammonia is already widely used as a raw material for fertilizers and chemical products, and due to established production, transportation, storage technologies, and supply chains, it is relatively easy to procure and utilize. Since ammonia contains no carbon, it does not emit CO2 during combustion, making it a cost-effective decarbonized fuel whose expanded use is expected in the future. On the other hand, one challenge in developing engines that use only ammonia as fuel is its inherently difficult combustibility.

Recognizing the future potential of ammonia as a next-generation fuel, Toyota Industries began developing engines that operate solely on ammonia approximately ten years ago. The company has been working on realizing fuel reforming technology that makes ammonia more combustible by extracting hydrogen, a flammable substance, through catalytic reactions from ammonia, which is otherwise difficult to ignite. The ammonia engine for generators, now under joint development, is an improved version based on Toyota Industries’ existing gas engines, adopting the fundamental structure previously established by the company and others (*1).
Going forward, Toyota Industries plans to conduct further development to ensure performance and reliability suitable for generator applications. Following this, the company will install its ammonia engine into Denyo’s generators and proceed with full-scale verification after evaluating compatibility and other factors.

Toyota Industries will aim to provide ammonia engines as one option toward achieving carbon neutrality while conducting market demand surveys. By promoting the effective use of ammonia, the company will advance the establishment of engine technologies that contribute to further reducing environmental impact.
