India Breaks Ground on Near-2GW Green Hydrogen Hub
- Construction has officially begun on India’s largest green hydrogen-based ammonia project, a near-2GW electrolyser complex aimed squarely at European export markets.
India has formally entered the global big-league of green hydrogen with the start of construction on a massive hydrogen-based ammonia project on the east coast. AM Green has laid the foundation stone for its flagship development in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, marking the official launch of what will be the country’s largest renewable hydrogen project and one of the biggest worldwide. The first phase of the site—previously owned by Nagarjuna Fertilizers—is now under active construction, with initial output targeted for mid-2027.
The project is designed to produce up to 1.5 million tonnes per year of green ammonia, with AM Green expecting to reach 0.5 mtpa by mid-2027 before ramping up to full capacity. Once complete, the facility will integrate around 1.95GW of alkaline electrolysers, backed by 7.5GW of renewable generation and 2GW of pumped-storage hydro to ensure round-the-clock operation—an unusually ambitious configuration intended to sidestep intermittency risks that have slowed other green hydrogen schemes.
Export-led model targets Europe from day one
AM Green is not building on speculation alone. The developer has already signed a firm agreement to supply 500,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia to Uniper, with first deliveries expected in 2028. It is also in discussions with BASF and RWE, positioning Kakinada as a potential anchor point for large-scale green hydrogen trade between India and Europe.
If executed as planned, these contracts would represent some of the first genuinely industrial-scale green hydrogen export flows linking South Asia with European decarbonisation demand. Electrolyser supply has already been lined up with John Cockerill, alongside long-term “round-the-clock” renewable power purchase agreements intended to stabilise operating costs—an issue that has derailed multiple hydrogen projects elsewhere.
Andhra Pradesh bets on hydrogen as an industrial reset
The foundation stone ceremony was led by Nara Chandrababu Naidu, who framed the project as a turning point for the state’s economic strategy. He said the first equipment installations brought Andhra Pradesh closer to becoming a “net exporter of green energy,” with Kakinada positioned as a future green hydrogen valley.
AM Green argues the project will generate “real economic impact” by reviving idle industrial assets, creating jobs, and building a new clean-energy ecosystem around hydrogen, ammonia, renewables and storage. The model mirrors a broader Indian strategy: leverage vast solar and wind potential to serve overseas markets where land, power and permitting constraints are tightening.
Big promises, big execution risk
At nearly 2GW of electrolysers and 7.5GW of renewables, Kakinada sits firmly in the megaproject category—and history shows that scale alone guarantees nothing. The compressed timeline, complex integration of storage, renewables and export logistics, and reliance on European offtake all mean execution discipline will matter more than announcements.
Still, unlike many paper projects, this one now has concrete poured, contracts signed and equipment suppliers named. If AM Green delivers even close to its targets, India will move from hydrogen ambition to hydrogen reality—and force other would-be exporters to raise their game.
