AEM Membrane Price Unveiled

Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) is a core component of AEM electrolysers, critically impacting their performance. Its primary role is to conduct OH⁻ (hydroxide ions) between the anode and cathode while preventing gas cross-diffusion (hydrogen and oxygen), ensuring the efficiency and safety of the electrolysis.

Generally, the sales price of AEM membrane is a core commercial information for its producer. However, in a rare move, an AEM membrane innovator in China publicly disclosed quote price of its 60 µm AEM membrane (whole roll, per m2) and the key technical specifications.

The movement, along with a large number of developments of AEM electrolysers recently, may suggest large scale commercialization of AEM electrolyser is coming in China. Stakeholders should be prepared for the challenges and opportunities.

On August 11, 2025, Suzhou Zhiqing Bocai Technology Co., Ltd., a Chinese R&D and manufacturer of AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane), disclosed the quote price for its 60 µm AEM membrane which is set at 3,980 Yuan per m2, or $550 per m2. The price is substantially lower than that of international leading companies whereas the membrane features similar performance, according to the company.

The company is also expecting significant price reduction from this level through optimization of procedure and volume production.
