Plug Power has installed a 5MW PEM electrolyser at Cleanergy Solutions’ green hydrogen production and refuelling plant in Walvis Bay, Namibia.

Cleanergy opened the country’s first combined production and refuelling facility in September.

The site, which includes a 5MW solar park and a 5.9MWh battery energy storage system, will locally produce green hydrogen for trucks, port, and rail equipment, in addition to small ships operating through the Port of Walvis Bay.

Plug’s GenEco system will supply green hydrogen directly to adjacent refuelling infrastructure.

One customer is Dutch shipowner Cmb.Tech, which is set to deploy dual-fuel vessels currently under construction at the port of Walvis Bay next year.

Jose Luis Crespo, President and Chief Revenue Officer of Plug, said projects like Cleanergy’s demonstrate how green hydrogen is moving from concept to commercial reality.

“By deploying our electrolyser technology in growing hydrogen markets such as Namibia, we are helping partners build reliable, scalable hydrogen infrastructure that can decarbonise transportation and industrial activity today while supporting long-term economic development.”

Cleanergy’s initiative is an early development in Namibia’s hydrogen sector. The nation has been slated as a key potential green hydrogen exporter thanks to its potential low-cost renewables.
