Umicore develops platinum coating for titanium components in electrolyzers
Umicore has developed a platinum coating solution for titanium components in PEM electrolyzers using a new electrochemical deposition process. This method eliminates the need for the conventional hydrofluoric acid process, making hazardous chemicals unnecessary for platinization.
Developed by its Metal Deposition Solutions business unit, Umicore’s proprietary platinum coating technology is applied to titanium-based porous transport layers (PTL) and bipolar plates (BPL). This innovation replaces toxic chemicals typically used in wet chemical processes, enhancing both the sustainability and safety of electrolyzer manufacturing. The newly designed plating process improves the durability and performance of PTL and BPL – crucial components in PEM electrolyzers. The combination of platinum coatings and titanium substrates extends electrolyzer lifespan and optimizes hydrogen production through better conductivity and corrosion resistance.
Umicore’s electroplating facilities are optimized for handling titanium-based materials and operate globally across Europe, North America, and Asia, ensuring a reliable supply chain for advanced hydrogen production technology.
