Construction in Saudi Arabia has reached 80% completion across the green hydrogen facility, wind garden, solar farm and transmission grid, with milestone equipment being received and installed, including wind turbines, hydrogen storage vessels, electrolyzers, cold box and pipe racks.

The 4 GW solar and wind power generation sites are scheduled for completion by mid-2026, with first ammonia product availability expected in 2027.

The NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), a joint venture equally owned by ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, is leading the construction of the world’s largest green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility powered entirely by renewable energy. This enormous project is set to produce up to 600 tonnes per day of carbon-free hydrogen, converted into green ammonia for cost-effective transportation and industrial use worldwide.

This ambitious undertaking is being developed at Oxagon in Saudi Arabia’s NEOM region, aligning seamlessly with the Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative. The NGHC facility covers an extensive area of over 300 square kilometers and will operate solely on approximately 4 GW of renewable electricity sourced from dedicated on-site wind and solar plants.

The project relies on “proven technologies,” with the unique integration of these technologies at this scale serving as a key differentiator. “Novel aspects include the integration of these technologies, particularly at this scale, and utilizing ammonia to transport the hydrogen to global markets,” the company said. NGHC expects the facility to save around five million metric tonnes of carbon emissions (CO2) per year, contributing significantly to the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors.

Air Products is the primary EPC contractor and system integrator, and is also the exclusive off-taker of the green hydrogen produced at the NGHC facility. “We are proud to be shaping the future of energy with first-mover projects like this one,” Air Products emphasized.
