Horizon to install 10MW AEM electrolyser system at Chinese steel plant
Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies’ subsidiary HET Hydrogen is installing two 5MW anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysers at a Chinese steel plant.
The hydrogen produced will be injected into the gas pipeline feeding the blast furnace operations at Rockcheck Steel Group’s facility in Tianjin. H2 View understands that the hydrogen will be blended with traditional fuels to lower emissions.
Green hydrogen will be produced using solar power from a 17MW building-integrated photovoltaic system. The electrolysers are designed to handle intermittent renewable energy sources.
Horizon claims the system will be the world’s first operational AEM electrolyser, with commissioning targeted for late 2025.
If the Tianjin initiative is successful, Horizon plans to roll out its AEM electrolysers globally, pairing them with solar, wind and other renewable energy sources.
The Singapore-based technology firm estimates its modules can produce hydrogen at around $2/kg. Horizon said green ammonia is the “next target for meaningful validation” of AEM at scale. As AEM electrolysis is still an emerging technology in the hydrogen industry, the 10MW capacity is likely to be the world’s largest AEM project.
Major firms like Michelin have backed AEM technology, aiming to combine the “best of both worlds” from PEM and alkaline electrolysis.
