US hydrogen solutions provider Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG) will deliver 10 MW of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers for the production of green hydrogen in Tasmania, Australia.

The US company said on Tuesday it has been contracted by Countrywide Hydrogen Pty Ltd, a unit of Australian solar installer ReNu Energy Ltd (ASX:RNE). The deal calls for it to deliver two 5-MW electrolyser units, to be installed in Brighton suburb, near the cities of Hobart and Launceston.

Countrywide Hydrogen’s plan is to produce 4,200 kg of green hydrogen daily from the two facilities, using renewable electricity that will initially come from the power grid. Subsequently, power will be sourced from behind-the-metre solar parks and power purchase agreements (PPAs) with wind, solar and hydropower developers.

The produced green hydrogen will be used in the road transport and natural gas segments in Tasmania.

According to the statement, a second electrolyser could be installed at each site to meet increased demand.

Plug Power in January abandoned a plan to jointly build an electrolyser factory with Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), the green energy business of Australian iron ore company Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX:FMG), in Queensland.
