NEW YORK & TOKYO & DUSSELDORF, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Japanese diversified global manufacturer Asahi Kasei has made an investment in Ionomr Innovations Inc., a Canadian startup that manufactures anion exchange membrane (AEM). Ionomr’s high-performance, durable, next-generation membrane has the potential to be transformative for the cost-efficient and scalable production of green hydrogen by electrolysis using renewable energy.

Countries around the world consider the large-scale production of green hydrogen as a key to achieving a zero-emission society in the coming decades. As a one-stop solution provider of scalable alkaline-water electrolyzers and other components for hydrogen production, Asahi Kasei is taking an important step forward in its hydrogen business by investing in Canadian startup Ionomr Innovations. Founded in 2018, Ionomr specializes in the development and sale of next-generation membranes for use in electrolyzers and other applications. Ionomr’s anion exchange membrane (AEM) allows electrolysis without the need for precious metals as catalyst, allowing for easy scalability with reduced costs, while featuring outstanding durability and performance.

Sharing expertise and contributing to the next-generation membrane

In 2010, Asahi Kasei began developing an alkaline water electrolyzer for hydrogen production leveraging its decades of experience in membrane-process electrolysis, and has been participating in several projects globally. As part of a NEDO project,1 Asahi Kasei supplied a 10 MW-scale alkaline water electrolyzer to the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R)2 and has been operating it since 2020. The company is accelerating its development and demonstration activities toward commercialization in 2025.

By sharing its unmatched expertise in the field of membrane technology with Ionomr, Asahi Kasei expects to help further raise the performance of Ionomr’s AEM products. “This investment enables us to team up with a leading expert for a membrane technology that could be a game changer for the production of green hydrogen in terms of cost-effectiveness and scalability. One of the first projects within the “Care for Earth” investment framework

The collaboration with Ionomr is one of the first projects within Asahi Kasei’s “Care for Earth” investment framework, which was announced in April 2023. The company allocated up to $100 million for investments worldwide in early-stage startups that aim to solve issues in environmental fields such as hydrogen, energy storage, carbon management, and bio-based chemicals over the 5-year period up to fiscal 2027. As described in its medium-term management plan in April 2022, hydrogen-related business is one of Asahi Kasei’s “10 Growth Gears” (GG10), businesses that are to drive future growth, targeting more than 70% of operating income around 2030.

Versogen, a developer of anion exchange membrane (AEM) technologies, has achieved membrane production capacity that can support 1 gigawatt of AEM electrolyzers per year. From the company’s roots in a research lab at the University of Delaware, Versogen has scaled up the production capabilities of its proprietary PiperION polymer by a factor greater than 2,000 times.

Poly(aryl piperidinium) polymers introduce an alkaline-stable cation—piperidinium—into a rigid aromatic polymer backbone that is free of ether bonds. Anion exchange membranes (AEM), or hydroxide exchange membranes (HEM), formed from PiperION polymers exhibit superior chemical stability, anion conductivity, decreased water uptake, good solubility in selected solvents, and improved mechanical properties, Versogen says.

For example, when a 5cm-2 electrolyzer is fed at the anode with pure water, Versogen membranes deliver an electrical current density of 1,020 mA cm-2 at 1.8 V and a durability of 160 hours at 200mA cm-2 using a nickel-based anode catalyst and nickel foam porous transport layer.

Versogen’s membrane is primarily used in electrolyzers that produce green hydrogen. The innovative startup also has customers using the membranes in carbon capture, seawater electrolysis, fuel cells and lithium extraction.

This achievement is supercharged by Versogen’s role as an anchoring partner in the Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2) Hydrogen Hub, which was selected as one of seven winners of the DOE’s Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs Program in October 2023. The MACH2 may receive up to $750 million in funding to support the development of a network of hydrogen producers, consumers and infrastructure in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

[디지털투데이 AI리포터] 일본 가스기구 제조업체 노리츠가 수소를 사용하는 친환경 가정용 온수기 시제품을 개발했다.

14일(현지시간) 일본 IT미디어에 따르면 노리츠가 수소로 작동되는 가정용 온수기의 프로토타입을 발표했다. 노리츠에 따르면 시제품은 현재 가정용 온수기와 동일한 용량을 확보하면서도 이산화탄소(CO₂)를 배출하지 않는다. 노리츠는 오는 2025년 제품 상용화를 목표로 하고 있다.

노리츠는 "가정용 온수기가 이산화탄소 배출에 영향이 크다"며 "수소를 사용하는 온수기를 통해 탄소중립 실현을 위한 로드맵 실현에 크게 기여할 것"이라고 전했다. 노리츠는 수소 인프라가 확산 중인 유럽과 호주 진출을 고려하고 있으며 향후 실내 표준 설치형(상향 배기식) 개발도 추진할 계획이다.
