Green Hysland Project – First Injection of Green Hydrogen into Spanish Gas Grid Showcases Innovative Energy Technologies in Mallorca

Learn how the Green Hysland project is breaking new ground with the first-ever injection of green hydrogen into Spain’s gas grid, showcasing innovative technologies for a more sustainable energy future in Mallorca.

Palma, September 19, 2024 – The Green Hysland project has achieved a groundbreaking milestone with the first-ever injection of green hydrogen (H₂) into the Spanish gas network. This achievement represents a significant advancement in the development of innovative energy technologies, positioning Mallorca at the forefront of green hydrogen innovation.

Developed as part of the European Union’s Clean Hydrogen Partnership, this initiative demonstrates the technical feasibility of blending hydrogen into existing natural gas infrastructure. The newly operational infrastructure will supply 115,000 households and 2,000 industrial and tertiary consumers across Mallorca with a blend of natural gas and green hydrogen, avoiding 4,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

A Pioneering Innovation for Green Hysland

This achievement highlights the potential of green hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy solution. By integrating hydrogen into the island’s gas network, Green Hysland is not only innovating in clean energy technology but also setting the foundation for future scalability. The infrastructure developed includes a hydrogen reception stationa 3.2 km pipeline, and a blender to ensure a seamless and safe integration of hydrogen into the grid.

Fidel López Soria, CEO of Redexis, commented:

This achievement represents a before and after in energy innovation. With the first injection of green hydrogen into the natural gas grid, we not only demonstrate the innovative potential of our infrastructures but also establish a model that can be replicated across other regions and countries in Europe.

Inauguration Event: Attendees and Remarks

The inauguration of this groundbreaking infrastructure took place on September 19, 2024, in Palma de Mallorca, with several key dignitaries and industry leaders in attendance. Fidel López Soria, CEO of Redexis, hosted the event, welcoming Margalida Prohens, President of the Government of the Balearic Islands; Alfonso Rodríguez, Government Delegate in the Balearic Islands; Miguel González Suela, Undersecretary for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge; Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, Minister for Enterprise, Employment and Energy of the Balearic Islands, and Jaime Martínez, Mayor of Palma. The event was widely covered by the local press, Europress, and TVE.

During the ceremony, Margalida Prohens, President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, remarked: “This project represents a major step forward in energy innovation for our islands, positioning us as leaders in the use of green hydrogen technologies. It also offers an opportunity to attract green investment and spur reindustrialization efforts.”

Scalability and Future Opportunities

Green Hysland’s pioneering approach lays the groundwork for further technological innovations in renewable gases. The current system allows a 2% hydrogen blend, but the infrastructure is prepared to handle up to 20% in the future, showing the flexibility and potential of this innovation. This innovative project is backed by over 30 partners, including Enagás RenovableAcciona Energía, and Cemex, as it advances Europe’s clean energy goals.

A Model of Energy Innovation

While the existing natural gas infrastructure will still play a dominant role, Green Hysland showcases how innovative energy technologies can integrate clean energy sources like hydrogen into traditional systems. As the project continues through 2025, it will explore more opportunities to increase the hydrogen blend, supporting innovation in renewable energy solutions.

Nuvera Fuel Cells Delivers First Hydrogen-Powered Mobile Generator for Customer Site Demonstration

BILLERICA, MA / ACCESSWIRE / September 19, 2024 / Nuvera Fuel Cells, LLC, an established leader in the development of high-performance, zero-emission fuel cell products, will demonstrate its first operational HydroCharge™ unit, a hydrogen-powered AC Genset and DC fast charger for on-site power and EV charging. The prototype unit, developed in collaboration with power management services provider Power Innovations International, will be demonstrated at the Fresno, California location of Papé Material Handling.

Nuvera’s hydrogen-powered genset and fast charger offers high-quality AC and DC power for a wide range of applications, including rapid EV charging and powering electric equipment. The genset provides clean, reliable, on-demand power to locations with limited or no grid access.

Suitable for warehouses, parking lots, malls, construction zones, mining sites, shipping ports, and airports, it can also address the need for backup power in data centers, telecom facilities, and car rental centers. Additionally, HydroCharge™ can support temporary power needs for rental fleets, concerts, festivals, sports events, movie sets and urban construction. For interim power solutions, it is ideal for customer assets or long-term rentals, offering a crucial alternative when grid availability is insufficient.

Kedar Murthy, Nuvera’s chief commercial officer, said :

Nuvera has created a zero-emission solution designed to meet the growing demand for clean, portable power suppliers,

“As grid limitations pose challenges to the clean energy transition and California Air Resources Board zero-emission generator mandates begin in 2028, the advantages of hydrogen fuel cell solutions are becoming increasingly clear. We look forward to demonstrating that our hydrogen-electric generator successfully matches the performance of internal combustion engine gensets and provides a transportable, off-grid power source with refueling time comparable to diesel and gas-powered machines.”

The prototype unit, which was unveiled at ACT Expo 2024 in Las Vegas, has undergone continuous validation testing at Nuvera’s factory. Development of the fully commercial version is currently underway.

Zero-emission Nuvera® Fuel Cell Engines for motive and stationary applications enable customers to meet demanding performance requirements and emission and noise reduction mandates. As demand for diesel alternatives to support clean energy projects grows, Nuvera is rapidly advancing toward a milestone solution for clean on-site power and grid-independent EV charging.
