미쓰비시중공업 투자…‘골드러시’ 기대감 반영
위성, 레이저 라이더 이미징 분석 기법 활용
모놀리스 공동창립자 피트 존슨 CEO로 활동

미쓰비시중공업(MHI)의 미국법인이 최근 미국 콜로라도주 덴버에 본사가 있는 스타트업인 콜로마(Koloma)에 지분 투자를 단행했다. 콜로마는 지질학적 수소, 흔히 ‘백색(White)수소’ 또는 ‘골드(Gold)수소’라고 부르는 천연수소 탐사·시추 회사로 잘 알려져 있다. 

콜로마는 설립 후 불과 몇 년 만에 3억5,000만 달러(약 4,800억 원)가 넘는 자금을 조달하는 데 성공했다. 빌 게이츠가 설립한 브레이크스루 에너지 외에도 코슬라 벤처스, 아마존 클라이메이트 플레지 펀드, 유나이티드 항공 등이 참여했다. 여기에 미쓰비시중공업이 이름을 올렸다.

 

위성 촬영, AI 기술 활용

돈이 몰리는 데는 이유가 있다. 올해 초 미국 지질조사국(USGS)은 보고서를 통해 전 세계 지하에 총 5조 톤에 이르는 막대한 양의 천연수소가 매장되어 있다고 밝혔다. 지구상에는 수소가 넘쳐난다. 이중 단 1%만 생산에 성공해도 200년간 5억 톤을 공급할 수 있다.

그동안 수소 발굴에 나선 업체는 많지 않았다. 석유나 천연가스를 찾으려고 땅을 파다가 우연히 수소를 발견하는 식이었다. 

이제는 상황이 달라졌다. 미국, 호주, 캐나다, 스페인 등에 본사를 둔 스타트업을 중심으로 실제 수소를 찾기 위한 시추 활동을 활발히 전개하고 있다. 콜로마도 ‘수소 우물’을 발견하기 위해 나선 대표 기업 중 한 곳이다.

콜로마는 인공지능(AI)을 활용한 데이터 기반의 접근 방식을 취하고 있다. 콜로마의 톰 다라(Tom Darrah) 최고기술책임자(CTO)는 콜럼버스 연구실에서 암석과 가스 샘플 테스트를 통해 어느 현장에서 수소의 양과 순도가 가장 좋은지를 확인하고 있다.

콜로마는 천연수소 채굴 가능성이 높은 유망 부지에 대한 자세한 분석을 위해 위성과 레이저 라이더 이미징, 머신러닝 분석 기법을 활용하고 있으며 이 분야에 다수의 특허를 보유하고 있다. 

플라즈마 기술을 적용한 열분해 방식으로 청록수소와 카본블랙을 생산하는 모놀리스(Monolith Materials)의 공동창립자로 참여한 이력이 있는 피트 존슨(Pete Johnson)이 콜로마의 최고경영자(CEO)인 점도 흥미롭다. 

피트 존슨은 지난해 7월 포브스와 행한 인터뷰에서 “콜로마가 시장에 서둘러 진출하지 않는 이유는 시장이 아직 완전히 준비되지 않았기 때문”이라고 밝혔다. “수소의 유일한 수요처는 정유소와 암모니아 공장이다. 수소가 많은 곳을 알고 있더라도 시장이 발전할 때까지 기다려야 한다. 우리는 역량을 구축하고 수소 수요가 진짜 정점에 도달하는 시점에 상업성을 맞추려고 노력할 것이다.”

그레이수소는 생산비가 저렴하지만 탄소 배출 문제가 있다. 그린수소는 깨끗하지만 경제성을 맞추기가 어렵다. 그에 반해 천연수소는 탄소 배출에서 자유롭고 채굴 과정에 드는 물도 셰일가스보다 적어 환경에 미치는 위험성이 적다고 주장한다.  

하지만 지하에서 수소를 얻는 일이 까다롭다는 점을 부인하기는 어렵다. 주기율표에서 가장 가벼운 원소로 산소, 탄소, 유황 같은 다른 원소와 결합해 자연에 존재하는 데다 이송을 위한 특별한 배관망을 필요로 하고, 고압저장이나 액화 등에 큰 에너지가 든다. 

여러 난점과 번거로움에도 불구하고 천연수소에 대한 투자가 늘고 있다는 점은 청정수소 생산이 어렵다는 점을 반증한다. 또 새로운 에너지원에 대한 가능성, ‘골드러시’의 기대감이 매력적인 투자처로 거듭나게 하고 있다.

Japanese automobile giant Toyota has unveiled swappable hydrogen fuel cartridges at the ongoing Japan Mobility Bizweek, as part of its research and development efforts in the clean energy space.

Toyota envisions that its easy-to-carry cartridges could help power electric vehicles and homes with clean hydrogen in the future.

Hydrogen has the potential to be the ultimate clean energy source in the future thanks to its high energy density and ability to generate power without any carbon emissions. Unlike wind and solar-based energy, hydrogen can be used on demand and even burned to generate high temperatures for industrial applications. 

When used in fuel cells, hydrogen combines with oxygen to generate electricity and water as a by-product. It is a lightweight fuel that can be stored and transported easily, and therefore, it is also being explored as an option for flying airplanes. 

Toyota’s swappable cartridges

Unlike EVs, which need a few hours of charging time, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) can hit the road right away after a fueling stop. However, to achieve this ability, a network of hydrogen pumping stations needs to be built first. 

The previous experiences rolling out fossil fuels and EV charging stations have shown that building a network is time-consuming and reaching remote areas can be difficult. Like EVs, this could create anxiety with FCEVs as well, thereby slowing their adoption. 

Toyota’s solution to the problem is carrying fuel in cartridges, making it easy to swap in vehicles while carrying it onboard when required. The company debuted the concept with its subsidiary company, Woven, in 2022 and will showcase improvements to the product at Mobility Bizweek. 

In a press release, the company said it has improved the portable cartridge by reducing the size and weight of the hydrogen tanks. The newly unveiled cartridges are so light that they can be carried by hand or in a specially designed backpack. 

Going beyond vehicles for everyday applications

Future FCEV owners could carry these swappable cartridges onboard during long road journeys and completely avoid a fuel stop. However, Toyota isn’t limiting the application to vehicles alone.

Because of its easy-to-carry size, the cartridge can also power homes during a power outage or even daily functions like cooking. The company demonstrated a potential use of the technology by powering a cooking stove in collaboration with Rinnai at the ongoing event.

In the future, instead of diesel generators, one could see hydrogen-fueled power generators firing up in case of a power outage during emergencies.

Given hydrogen’s highly explosive nature and the fears associated with using the fuel, the company is working towards making it a familiar and safe energy source by introducing its use for day-to-day functions. 

Just like liquified petroleum gas is pressurized and supplied to homes and industrial kitchens worldwide, hydrogen could soon become a regular energy source.

未来エネルギーである水素の世界的産業覇権を掌握するための主要国間の競争が激しく広がっている。水素に最も積極的な国は未来自動車市場先取りに向け電気自動車に続き水素自動車にも集中投資をしている中国だ。中国政府は2020年に新エネルギー自動車産業発展計画を立て水素エネルギーと水素自動車を未来戦略産業の軸に宣言した。2022年には水素エネルギー産業発展中長期計画を発表したのに続き、今年の政府業務報告では過去初めて水素エネルギーを戦略的新産業リストに含めた。 これは具体的成果として現れている。中国の市場調査機関EVタンクによると、中国は昨年上半期基準351カ所で、韓国の179カ所の2倍に達する世界で最も多い水素ステーションを持っている。世界の水素ステーションが1089カ所で、そのうち32.2%が中国にあるのだ。中国前瞻産業研究院によると、中国は2030年までに水素ステーション1000カ所を設置し運営する目標だ。中国清華大学の欧陽明高教授は現地メディアを通じ「できるだけ早く水素エネルギー革新プラットフォームを構築し、核心人材養成に出るのが中国の目標」と話した。 これに対抗する米国は法的に水素産業育成の軸を用意して大々的な投資に出た。米国は2022年に発効したインフレ抑制法を通じて水素生産関連130億ドル(約2兆円)規模、超党派インフラ法(BIL)を通じて95億ドル規模の支援策をそれぞれ用意した。細部内訳も具体的だ。地域水素ハブ構築に80億ドル、水電解プログラム構築に10億ドル、水素製造とリサイクル関連の研究開発に5億ドルをそれぞれ支援することにした。中国と同じように2030年までに1000カ所の水素ステーションを設置するのが目標だ。 日本もやはり水素産業生態系構築に積極的に進んでいる。日本は韓国より早い2017年に水素産業活性化対策を発表したが、特有の保守的な政策推進のため韓国や中国など競合国より産業生態系構築には遅れている状態だ。だが最近民間主導の投資拡大で雰囲気反転を摸索している。みずほ銀行は今年、水素と関連技術の生産と供給に向け2030年までに2兆円規模を投資すると明らかにした。 一方、最近韓日政府は水素協力に積極的に進んでいる。両国の産業相は6月に米国で会い、水素・アンモニア供給網と活用協力プラットフォーム推進で同意している。こうした中、27日には現代(ヒョンデ)自動車グループの鄭義宣(チョン・ウィソン)会長とトヨタ自動車の豊田章男会長の会合が予定されており、両社間の「水素同盟」が現実化するだろうという見通しが出ている。

Ohmium International has signed a term sheet with SwitcH2 BV, a renewable energy joint venture that includes partners such as BW Offshore, to develop PEM electrolyzer solutions for a pioneering 300-MW offshore floating green hydrogen and ammonia synthesis project led by SwitcH2.

 

The project, located off the coast of Southern Europe, will establish an industrial-scale floating green hydrogen and ammonia production facility based on proven Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) technologies. Ohmium’s 300 MW PEM electrolyzer solutions will be installed aboard SwitcH2’s 268-meter FPSO vessel. Once operational, the facility will have an annual production capacity of up to 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and nearly 300 kton of green ammonia – enough to fuel multiple oceangoing vessels for a full year.

 

Ohmium’s PEM electrolyzers will utilize nearshore solar and wind power, along with treated seawater, to produce green hydrogen. The hydrogen will then be fed into an on-deck ammonia synthesis unit, with the resulting green ammonia eventually offloaded onto carriers for transport to offtakers. Supported by the Dutch government and with design approval in principle from the Norwegian certification agency DNV, the project aims to begin green ammonia production by 2029.

 

“We are pleased to have Ohmium join us in making this pioneering project possible,” said SwitcH2’s director and co-founder Bob Rietveldt. “Ohmium’s compact, hyper modular PEM electrolyzers are ideally suited for the space constrained FPSO setting. Their product delivers high efficiency, and the comprehensive, standardized design enables flexible and rapid installation, at scale.”

On October 14, 2024, a significant stride was made in sustainable aviation with the groundbreaking ceremony of the Shuangyashan Green Methanol and Green Aviation Fuel Demonstration Base. This ambitious project, spearheaded by China Energy Engineering and China Electric Power Engineering Consulting Group Co., Ltd., is located in the Shuangyashan Economic and Technological Development Zone, Heilongjiang Province. It is designed to fuse wind, solar, and hydrogen technologies with biomass to produce green aviation fuel.

The project aims to produce 200,000 tons of green methanol and 300,000 tons of green aviation fuel each year. The first phase of the project alone involves an investment of about 6 billion yuan ($857 million), focusing on producing 100,000 tons of green aviation fuel annually. This phase includes the construction of a 450-megawatt wind farm, a photovoltaic power station, a water electrolysis hydrogen production station, a biomass pretreatment plant, and a green aviation fuel synthesis plant, slated for operation by 2027.

This plant is part of a broader strategy that involves the integration of energy, agriculture, chemical, and transportation industries, utilizing process modules like biomass storage and pretreatment, biomass gasification, and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of aviation fuel. The adoption of world-leading solutions and technologies with independent intellectual property rights underlines the project's innovation and potential to overcome the current "bottleneck" technologies in biomass gasification.

Once operational, the Shuangyashan facility will not only boost the local economy but also enable significant annual carbon emission reductions, supporting the city's transition towards a modern industrial system and high-quality development. This initiative is in line with China's "dual carbon" strategy, emphasizing carbon neutrality and the construction of a new energy framework.
